Over the past week, I’ve spent some time reviewing and refining the direction of Nature’s Revelations. I want each publication to be worthwhile—something created thoughtfully rather than simply sent because another day has arrived.

I apologize for any confusion during the change from daily to weekly, but I also don’t want to flood your mailbox.

My new goal is to publish one carefully prepared edition each week, creating 52 Nature’s Revelations each year—a complete annual collection celebrating God’s creation through photography, observation, Scripture, and reflection.

The weekly schedule will also give me more opportunity to respond personally to your comments and messages, something I very much want to do.

Future editions will feature both new photographs and images gathered over many years, each chosen to highlight the wonder and beauty of creation in the best way I can.

God’s creation is such a joy to observe and photograph, and sharing it with you is truly a blessing.

An early morning walk along Park Point Beach reminds me just how immense Lake Superior truly is. Beneath a glowing August sunrise, a lone ship rests quietly, surrounded by endless water and sky.

Early August often brings one of the calmest seasons on the lake. Spring storms have passed, winds soften, and Lake Superior settles into a peaceful rhythm before autumn’s energy returns.

The gentle waves, distant calls of gulls, and cool morning breeze invite quiet reflection and gratitude for the beauty God has woven into creation.

“Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and striving after wind.” — Ecclesiastes 4:6

Thank you, Lord, for the gift of stillness and for the quiet assurance that Your peace is never far away.

From the quiet seat of a kayak, the Duluth Ship Canal reveals a different character at sunrise. Resting just above the water, each ripple reflects the golden morning light.

Lake Superior never greets the morning the same way twice. Its changing light, shifting reflections, and endless horizon quietly remind us of God’s constant creativity and faithful presence.

For generations, these waters have carried ships safely between the harbor and the open lake. They remind me that God also guides us through life’s changing seasons.

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” — Isaiah 43:2

The stillness of early morning, whether sitting in a chair or floating in a boat, is an opportunity to thank God for the blessings of a new day.

A brilliant rainbow arches over Duluth Harbor after a passing summer storm, stretching from hillside to shoreline above Lake Superior. Moments like this are brief, yet they fill us with awe.

Rainbows form when sunlight passes through raindrops, bending and separating into the colors of the spectrum. During the warm, moisture-filled days of early August, thunderstorms often create the perfect conditions for these brilliant displays. Occasionally, a faint second rainbow appears above the first, its colors reversed.

“I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” — Genesis 9:13

Whenever I witness a rainbow, I’m reminded that God’s promises are as enduring as His creation. Even after life’s darkest storms, He faithfully fills the sky with hope.

By late July, weeks of summer warmth create rising air currents that build towering cumulus clouds high above Lake Superior. On this evening, the upper reaches glowed with brilliant whites and soft pastel colors against the deep blue sky.

Though they often begin as fair-weather clouds, cumulus towers can rapidly grow into thunderstorms over 40,000 feet tall. Powerful updrafts lift moisture into colder air, where rain, hail, and lightning are formed. Their growth reminds us how alive the summer atmosphere truly is.

Looking upward fills us with awe as these majestic clouds drift across the sky.

“He makes the clouds His chariot; He walks upon the wings of the wind.” — Psalm 104:3

Their beauty and power remind us of the God whose handiwork fills the heavens.

Ships like this represent a remarkable chapter in maritime history when wind-powered commerce, exploration, and discovery connected ports across the Great Lakes and oceans of the world.

Watching a tall ship glide silently across the harbor stirs the imagination and connects us to the courage and determination of those who sailed these waters generations ago. These vessels remind us of a time when people depended on the wind, the weather, and their skill to guide them safely home.

It is fascinating to remember that even in biblical times, ships like these were vital for commerce and transportation. We have much to be thankful for, including the wisdom and craftsmanship God gave mankind to harness the wind and waters for exploration, trade, and discovery — all with a beauty uniquely their own.

“The ships of Tarshish travel for you with your merchandise.” — Isaiah 60:9

May we never lose sight of the heritage that shaped our communities, and may the stories carried upon these waters continue to inspire future generations to remember where they came from.

A late July storm transformed Gooseberry Falls into a scene more reminiscent of spring runoff than midsummer. Several inches of rain poured across the North Shore, swelling the Gooseberry River and sending torrents of muddy water crashing through the gorge toward Lake Superior.

Standing near the riverbank, you could feel the thunder of the water beneath your feet as mist filled the air and the roar echoed through the valley. Trees that normally stand peacefully along the shoreline suddenly seemed small against the overwhelming force of the floodwaters. In moments like this, nature reminds us how quickly calm beauty can become raw power.

Water is one of creation’s greatest forces. It shapes valleys, carves rock, nourishes forests, and sustains life itself. Yet its immense power also humbles us, reminding us that we are part of something far greater than ourselves.

“But let justice roll down like waters

And righteousness is like an ever-flowing stream.” — Amos 5:24

Moments like these remind us that humility is not weakness, but the proper response to the majesty and power of God’s creation.

A peaceful July sunrise glows beyond the Duluth South Pier Lighthouse as soft pastel colors spread across the calm waters of Lake Superior. Near the horizon, the rising sun appears slightly distorted — a fascinating effect caused by atmospheric refraction as light bends through layers of cool air above the lake.

On mornings like this, time seems to slow. The gentle sound of waves against the pier, the distant cries of gulls, and the cool breath of Lake Superior create a moment of stillness that refreshes the soul.

Nature photography is more than capturing scenery; it is preserving a moment that can never be repeated. Each sunrise becomes both a photograph and a memory — a reminder of the beauty and order woven into creation.

“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” — Genesis 1:3

Every sunrise is a gift of grace and a reminder that each new day holds fresh beauty, fresh mercy, and another opportunity to pause and give thanks.

Palisade Head near Palisade Head on the North Shore of Lake Superior is one of the great hidden gems for photographing the shoreline. Light breezes, deep-blue water, forest-green hills, and the warm tones of ancient rock come together to create an unforgettable scene that captures Lake Superior in all its summer splendor.

These towering, lichen-covered cliffs rise nearly 300 feet above the crystal-clear waters below. In the distance, Shovel Point stretches into the lake, another rugged reminder of the North Shore’s raw beauty.

Standing here, it is easy to understand why Lake Superior truly is superior. The vastness, strength, and beauty of this place stir something deep within the soul.

“The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.” — Psalm 18:2

All of creation declares the glory of God, but places like this seem to proclaim it with unmistakable power. May we never lose our sense of wonder at the beauty He has made.

On July 26, 2013, the tall ship Sørlandet sailed beneath full canvas on Lake Superior as she departed Duluth Harbor. Launched in 1927 in Kristiansand, Norway, the Sørlandet remains the oldest full-rigged ship still in active service today. Ships like this represented the final great age of sail before steam power transformed world shipping.

Her arrival in Duluth felt especially fitting. The city’s rich maritime history, shaped by immigrant voyages, fishing fleets, ore carriers, and Great Lakes commerce, evokes nostalgia. For a brief moment, the harbor transported people back in time.

With a warm summer breeze filling her sails, the Sørlandet moved gracefully across Lake Superior toward her next port of call. Beneath towering masts and a maze of rigging, the scene could only be described as majestic.

“The wind blows to the south

and turns to the north;

round and round it goes,

ever returning on its course.” — Ecclesiastes 1:6

Beauty and majesty appear in many forms throughout creation, reminding us of the greater majesty awaiting those who will one day stand before the Lord face-to-face.

A thunderstorm approaches Caribou Lake, lightning flashing over the water. The world grows still—yet thunder rumbles, signaling the power drawing near. Calm and chaos meet in a single breath.

Just as the storm transforms the sky above Caribou Lake, lightning’s frequency worldwide reminds us that what seems rare up close can be constant on a larger scale—a reminder of the immense energy woven into creation.

These storms capture our attention, interrupting our routines and refocusing us. They remind us of our smallness and God’s greatness. Whether in nature or life, such upheaval often turns our eyes back to Him.

“He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth;

Who makes lightnings for the rain,

Who brings forth the wind from His treasuries.” — Psalm 135:7

Thunderstorms stir both awe and reverence, revealing a power beyond our understanding. Above all, they point us to the majesty and authority of God, the Creator of everything—a message echoed in every storm.

On a quiet July morning in the Boundary Waters, a lone fisherman stands along a mist-covered shoreline, casting gently into still waters. The rising fog softens the world, muting distractions and drawing everything into a moment of calm. In this hush, creation speaks—not loudly, but with quiet authority—revealing a glimpse of God’s presence.

Choosing stillness over business lets the soul rest, reflect, and renew. In a world filled with constant noise and motion, it has become something we rarely allow ourselves. We fill our days, but often leave no space for peace.

Here, in the simplicity of water, stone, and morning light, solitude finds us—if we are willing to receive it. God’s creation has a way of settling the heart, restoring what busyness wears away, and gently reminding us of His nearness.

“Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all.“ — 2 Thessalonians 3:16

Today, step away from the noise. Seek a quiet place, and let peace find you. It isn’t hard, but it does take purposeful effort.

A July sunrise rises directly behind the Duluth lighthouse, casting a brilliant glow that turns this steadfast structure into a silhouette of purpose. For a brief moment, light and structure align—heaven meeting earth in a quiet, powerful display.

Lighthouses exist for a single reason: to guide. They stand firm through storms, darkness, and shifting waters, offering direction to those navigating uncertain paths. This morning light reminds us that guidance is not always loud—but it is always present for those who look.

Each sunrise brings new light, new clarity, and a renewed opportunity to walk with purpose.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105

Many forms of gifts exist, and some people easily overlook them. Today itself is a gift—placed before you by the hand of God, full of purpose and possibility. Don’t rush past it. Step into this day with awareness and gratitude. Give thanks, embrace the gift you have received, and reflect that light to others through your life.

Passing showers during July often produce remarkable rainbows across the Northland. This double rainbow marched through the skies following a late afternoon thunderstorm.

A double rainbow occurs when light is reflected twice within water droplets. The second arc appears higher, fainter, and with reversed colors—a subtle echo of the first, adding depth to the display.

Throughout the ages, rainbows have been seen as a sign of hope. But biblical hope is more than a feeling or wish—it is a confident expectation rooted in God’s promises. It is steady, anchored, and trustworthy, even when the storm has not fully passed.

“When the rainbow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” — Genesis 9:16

The next rainbow you see, let it remind you that God keeps His promises. Carry that assurance into your daily life: trust Him in uncertainty, reflect His faithfulness to others, and become a visible sign of hope in a world that often stands in the rain, unable to see its way out.

The sea caves along the Bayfield Peninsula in Wisconsin reveal some of Lake Superior’s most striking beauty. Best explored by kayak, these richly colored sandstone cliffs tell a quiet story of time and motion.

Wave by wave, the lake carves into the stone—hollowing chambers, rounding edges, and shaping arches. Inside, the low echoes of water create a deep, rhythmic sound, like a living symphony within the rock.

These formations are not finished. Even now, they are changing. Next year, the sandstone will be a little smoother, the edges softer, the colors shifting with light and season.

“Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed,

and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

Though its waters roar and be troubled,

though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah.” — Psalm 46:2–3

Like these caves, we are being shaped over time. The process is often slow, sometimes unseen—but always purposeful. If it is the hand of God at work, then we can trust the shaping—for His glory and our good.

Charter boats slip out of Duluth at first light, fanning across the calm surface of Lake Superior. Trails of wake stretch behind them as they head toward deeper water, where lake trout, salmon, and whitefish move beneath the surface—hidden, yet dependable.

Fishing here is more than recreation; it’s a heritage. Long before modern gear and guided charters, these waters sustained families who rose early and worked the lake with patience and trust. Fishermen set their nets, cast their lines, and brought back each return filled with uncertainty and hope. That rhythm still echoes today.

Lake Superior remains generous, but never predictable. It reminds us that provision is not something we control, but something we receive. Beneath the surface, life continues in quiet abundance—part of a design far greater than what we see.

“The kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish.” — Matthew 13:47

As these boats disappear into the horizon, they carry more than anglers—they carry a living reminder that God’s creation still provides, just as it always has, for those willing to trust and go out.

With Gooseberry Falls as a backdrop, this cedar reveals how life endures along the North Shore—rooted in rock, shaped by water, and strengthened by every passing season.

In the height of summer, when the forest is full and green, it’s easy to overlook what lies beneath. Yet these roots tell the deeper story. Northern white cedars often grow in thin soil and harsh conditions. Their roots don’t sink deep—they spread, twist, and cling to stone, holding firm through spring floods, summer drought, autumn winds, and the long grip of winter ice.

“They are designed to endure.” Resistant to rot, slow to grow, yet incredibly persistent, cedars don’t wait for ideal conditions. They endure them. Season after season, they hold their ground. There’s a quiet strength here—one that doesn’t demand attention but remains unshaken through time.

“And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water… its leaf does not wither.” — Psalm 1:3

Take a moment today: where are you being asked to hold fast? Anchor yourself in what is true, just like the cedar does, and grow right where you are planted.

High above the deck, the crew moves with quiet purpose—balanced along narrow spars, hands working canvas and line against the open sky. From below, it looks almost effortless. But up there, every step demands focus, strength, and trust.

Tall ships on Lake Superior and across the Great Lakes were built for work, not ease. Sailors climbed rigging like this in all conditions—heat, cold, and sudden storms—securing sails that could not wait for calmer weather. With no modern safety gear, they relied on balance, experience, and one another.

Even on inland waters, the risks were real. The Great Lakes can turn quickly, building steep waves and powerful winds. To sail here required not just skill, but endurance and resolve. Today, the scene carries forward that same spirit. Each movement aloft reflects a tradition shaped by necessity and courage.

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me. — Psalm 28:7

There is something steadying in watching this work. It reminds us that strength is often quiet, built in small acts of faithfulness—one careful step, one secure line at a time.
