Mid-summer rainfall rushes down Amity Creek on the far eastern side of Duluth. Seven Bridges Road is one of Duluth’s hidden gems. Originally, wooden bridges built in 1900 were replaced in 1912. The stone bridge pictured here is one of these beautiful bridges. It is part of Occidental Boulevard, which extends to Skyline Parkway.

Seven Bridges Road exists because of one man’s vision: Samuel F. Snively. He deliberately routed the road to cross Amity Creek multiple times—not because it was practical, but because it made the drive more beautiful. In the early 1900s, people took horse-drawn carriage tours (”tallyho parties”) along this exact route for picnics and sightseeing.

It’s fascinating how one man’s vision has brought joy to countless people for more than 100 years. In the end, foresight and an understanding of a blessing triumphed over efficiency and cost.

He sends forth springs in the valleys;

They flow between the mountains; Psalm 104:10

Don’t overlook today’s blessings—they are already present, right where you are. Often provided by the foresight of others in times past.

Using a telephoto lens from Enger Tower in Duluth, the North Shore stretches quietly into the distance as the rising sun casts its path across Lake Superior. A thin band of clouds softens the light, briefly dividing the sun, while its reflection forms a golden road reaching toward the shoreline below.

Morning along the lake often reveals these calm, layered scenes—cool blues and purples giving way to warm tones as the day begins. Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake by surface area, slowly releases its stored warmth, shaping the air, the light, and the rhythm of each day along its shores.

From this vantage point, the city remains in shadow while the lake first catches the light. It’s a gentle reminder that perspective changes everything—what seems dim from one place may already be shining brightly from another.

“The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.” — Proverbs 4:18

From a higher place, the light reveals what was always waiting.

The morning sun rises quietly through the pines near Caribou Lake. Its light softened by mist and filtered through branches that have stood here for decades. There is no noise, no celebration—just a steady, faithful dawn.

Even on a day marked by fireworks and gatherings, the land begins the same way it always does—calm, ordered, and full of quiet beauty. The light pushes through the trees, illuminating what was hidden just moments before.

These pines, rooted deep in the forest of the Northland, remind us that strength and freedom are not loud things. They are built over time—through endurance, through patience, and through a steady reliance on something greater than ourselves.

It is easy to celebrate outward freedom, but moments like this call us to reflect on a deeper kind—the freedom found in the truth of God’s Word on which this country was founded.

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17

True freedom isn’t just declared—it is lived, rooted, and sustained over time. In Christ Alone is true freedom.

Standing perfectly still along the shoreline, the Great Blue Heron is a master of patience. This one waits quietly, eyes fixed, fully attentive to the subtle movements in the water.

For years, a heron would wander up from the lake and stand near my neighbor’s bird feeder, taking advantage of whatever small animals came within reach. Even there, away from the marsh, its instincts remained sharp and purposeful.

Wading through shallow water and marsh edges, these birds move with slow precision. When prey is spotted, the heron stretches its long neck and freezes—then, in an instant, strikes with its dagger-like bill.

Everything about this bird speaks of design—its stillness, its timing, its precision—all perfectly suited for survival.

“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?” — Job 12:7–9

In watching the heron, we are reminded that creation itself quietly points to its Creator.

Daisies belong to the sunflower family and have long been symbols of innocence, purity, and even remembrance. Though simple in form, they have also been used in traditional remedies, as their leaves possess mild anti-inflammatory properties.

Yet beyond their beauty and usefulness, daisies offer a gentle reminder of life’s brevity. Like all living things, they flourish for a season, then fade.

“As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.” — Psalm 103:15–16

And still, they point upward. Our lives should point beyond ourselves —toward the Son

An aerial view captures a long-time visitor to Duluth, the Lee A. Tregurtha, a vessel in service since 1942. Her clean lines and enduring design have stood the test of time—and continue to carry her forward across the waters of Lake Superior.

Originally built as the WWII tanker Mobiloil, she is now one of the oldest active ships on the Great Lakes—still working, still reliable, more than 80 years later. What passes through the canal here is more than a freighter; it is a living piece of maritime history, quietly doing its job.

Much like the lighthouse standing watch nearby, steady and faithful year after year. Age, in itself, matters little when you actively serve with purpose, for others, and for the glory of God.

“Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.” — Proverbs 16:31

Although youth seems long and full, the years fly by quickly. Embrace each day you have, and remember—if Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, greater things await you.

Lightning is one of the most dramatic and captivating phenomena to photograph. While it demands respect and distance, something is mesmerizing about watching bolts tear across the sky, followed by the deep, rolling thunder that echoes through the Northland.

Lightning strikes the Earth roughly 100 times every second—nearly 8 million times a day. Each bolt can carry 30,000 to 50,000 amps of current, a staggering display of power released in an instant. Moments like this remind us just how dynamic and alive our atmosphere truly is.

Yet even a storm of this magnitude is held in check. The same force that commands the lightning also governs the skies, the waters, and the rhythms of every season.

“The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightning he routed them.” — Psalm 18:13–14

A healthy respect for a lightning storm comes naturally—it is powerful, unpredictable, and beyond our control. We should not only fear the storm but also feel awe for the One who commands it.

The Milky Way, a perennial favorite for night photographers, stretches across the Northland sky from late winter through autumn. On this calm June morning at Split Rock State Park, I sat along the shoreline as waves gently brushed the beach and fireflies flickered in the darkness. It was 3 a.m., yet instead of fatigue, I felt fully awake—drawn in by the wonder unfolding overhead.

In moments like this, it’s impossible not to feel humbled by the vastness above. The Milky Way—our home galaxy—contains more than 100 billion stars and spans roughly 100,000 light-years across. What we see here is its dense central band, a distant river of light made visible on the clearest nights.

Standing beneath it, you feel both small and deeply connected. The same creation that stretches beyond comprehension also reaches into the quiet of this shoreline, into this moment.

“He determines the number of the stars; He gives to all of them their names.” — Psalm 147:4

Give thanks for the beauty of His creation, which not only inspires awe but gently points us back to Him.

One of Minnesota’s most impressive waterfalls, Gooseberry Falls is always an incredible place to photograph. The state park is known for its stunning cascades, rugged landscape, and abundant wildlife.

As you wander through the river valley, the air carries the sweet scent of cedar, blending with the cool, damp breath rising from the falls.

There is something timeless here. The century-old cedars tell a quiet story of longevity, endurance, and grace—their roots gripping ancient bedrock, holding fast, thriving year after year.

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

— Psalm 118:24

Even if you can’t make it to Gooseberry today, step outside for a moment and take in the day where you are. Every day is a gift from God, worthy of joy—no matter the circumstances.

An approaching shelf cloud warns of severe weather on the horizon over Caribou Lake. As this formation passed through the lightning detectors, the weather warning began to indicate imminent danger.

Driven by a surge of cool air spilling out of the storm, this sweeping shelf cloud forms as it lifts the warm, humid air ahead of it, building the layered, rolling structure seen here. Beneath it, rain and wind gather strength, while the calm water reflects a fleeting stillness just before the gust front arrives.

Late June is a critical period for storms in the Northland, and the striking advance of these foreboding formations is a collective call to action to seek shelter. The storm brought 60 mph winds, heavy rain, and hail, creating a typical summer event in the Northland.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1

In times of storms and danger, it is important to seek shelter and protection. Just as we can physically seek shelter from a storm, we can seek refuge and strength in God during times of trouble.

Making its scenic run from Duluth to Two Harbors, Locomotive 28 carries more than passengers—it carries history. This iron workhorse is a living reminder of an era when steam and steel connected the North Shore, moving timber, ore, and people through a rugged and growing land. Long before it comes into view, its presence is known—the distant whistle, the rhythmic churning, the ground trembling beneath its approach.

Set against the quiet beauty of summer, the contrast is striking. The engine, powered by fire and coal, moves with purpose, while lupine and pine stand in peaceful stillness, flourishing in the warmth of the season. Together, they tell a story of provision—natural resources given, and human ingenuity applied.

June brings the Northland to full expression. The air is alive with sound, color, and motion, each part playing its role in a greater design. From the smallest bloom to the might of a locomotive, all bear witness to a world carefully sustained.

“Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.” — Jeremiah 32:17

These enduring machines helped shape a nation, yet they also point beyond themselves—toward a power far greater, seen in both creation and the hands that learn to work within it.

Built in 1905, the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge spans the Duluth Shipping Canal, linking the city of Duluth to Park Point. What began as a simple transporter bridge has become one of Minnesota’s most iconic landmarks.

By day and night, it draws thousands of visitors and locals alike, who gather along the canal to watch ships pass beneath its rising steel frame. It is more than a bridge; it is a meeting place of industry and beauty, where commerce moves steadily through a landscape shaped by wind, water, and time.

In this moment, the scene holds it all—the glow of evening lights, the quiet movement of the harbor, the hum of the city, and the steady rhythm of life along Lake Superior. Duluth has a way of settling into you. The sights and sounds linger, calling you back again and again.

Like the instinct that guides migrating birds, there is a pull we don’t always understand. And in the same way, God’s providence works within His creation—quietly, faithfully—drawing us toward something greater, something lasting.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6

In life, as in the crossing of this bridge, we are reminded to trust the One who guides the way.

Witness the remarkable feeding behavior of an adult Pileated Woodpecker as it delivers fresh grubs to two eager chicks waiting inside the nest cavity. I captured this moment near Cascade State Park along the North Shore.

The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest in North America, reaching up to 19 inches in length with a wingspan of nearly 30 inches. Its powerful, chisel-like bill allows it to excavate deep cavities in trees, creating both nesting sites and access to hidden insects.

These young birds will soon leave the cavity, emerging one at a time—often climbing out before they are strong fliers. Once out, they remain near their parents, calling loudly for food as they continue to grow.

This scene is nature at its finest—a vivid display of provision, purpose, and design.

Look up today and notice the fullness of creation in the things around you. Remember that God values you; you are worth so much.

These Showy Lady Slippers are one of the Northland’s most striking wildflowers. I found this patch in the woods at Jay Cooke State Park. Its white petals and vivid pink pouch seem almost too ornate for the wild, yet it thrives only in very specific conditions—quiet, undisturbed places where patience defines the landscape.

Its beauty carries a remarkable purpose. The pouch is not simply decorative—it is a carefully designed trap. Small insects, drawn by color and scent, enter seeking nectar but cannot easily escape. Inside, they are guided along a narrow path, brushing first against the stigma and then the anthers. In doing so, they deposit pollen from another flower and leave carrying new pollen, ensuring the plant’s survival.

What appears delicate is, in truth, God’s precise and purposeful design.

“Consider the wildflowers, how they grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” — Luke 12:27

In the quiet of a northern wetland, the Showy Lady Slipper reminds us that beauty, order, and purpose are never accidental and always for the glory of God.

With the long, warm days of summer in the Northland, sailboats return in full number, drifting out onto Lake Superior to catch the gentle evening breeze.

Taken at Leif Erikson Park in Duluth, this scene captures a quiet moment easily missed amid the day’s rush. The lake lies calm, the wind barely stirring, as the boats gather for their Wednesday night regatta —waiting patiently for just enough breeze to fill their sails.

It is in moments like this that time seems to slow. There is no urgency, only a quiet invitation to pause and take in the simple beauty of the scene—one of many blessings given for such a time as this.

“God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.” — Genesis 1:10

Watching a sailboat brings calm to the mind, much like reading God’s Word brings peace to the soul.

On the longest day of the year, the Northland woods feel alive with quiet movement. In the thick green of early summer, a young white-tailed buck pauses, half-hidden among leaves and shadow. His velvet-covered antlers are just beginning their season of growth. As with much of photography, this was a matter of being there and not meticulous planning.

By late June, young bucks have settled into a rhythm of feeding and concealment. Their cautious nature keeps them still for long stretches—watching, listening, learning, and honing their survival skills —inspiring us to observe more closely.

Velvet antlers can grow up to an inch per day during this period, making them one of the fastest-growing tissues in the animal kingdom. Yet for all that rapid change, there is a gentleness to this stage of life—no battles, no urgency—just quiet growth in the Northland.

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” — Psalm 24:1

On this day of abundant light, even the hidden places are full of life. Take a moment to look more closely—the woods are watching too.

From the hillside at Enger Park, I captured this sunrise over Lake Superior on the longest day of the year—a turning point in the quiet rhythm of the seasons.

With summer now fully upon us, the sun rises far to the north along the horizon. Yet even at this peak, the cycle begins its gentle shift, and the sun will now slowly track southward again along its appointed path.

The change is subtle, almost imperceptible day to day, but certain. Just like the seasons of life, time moves forward with steady purpose—day by day, night by night—each moment part of a greater design. All of creation bears witness to this unfolding, a vast and ordered clock set in motion by the hand of God.

“From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised.” — Psalm 113:3

Lord, thank You for revealing Your glory in the world around us. In moments like this, we realize how small we are, yet we hold a deep place within Your perfect and unchanging design.

Located high above Lake Superior on a 130-foot cliff, Split Rock Lighthouse is an icon of the North Shore.

Since its establishment in 1910, Split Rock Lighthouse has been a steady guide, guiding ships across the vast expanse of Lake Superior with its powerful lens.

Before electrification, the lighthouse relied on an oil-burning lamp paired with a massive Fresnel lens, and it was the keeper’s duty to light it at sunset every single day—no matter the weather. The lens itself had to remain perfectly clean, as even the slightest smudge could diminish the light’s reach, so keepers spent hours carefully polishing the glass.

To keep the light rotating, the keeper had to regularly wind a clockwork mechanism driven by heavy weights. The keeper had to climb the tower every few hours, both day and night, to ensure the beacon remained operational.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?“ - Psalm 27:1

The Bible describes Christ as the “Light of the World”. It takes effort to keep the light lit. Have you read your Bible today?

By mid-June, the beautiful lupine wildflowers rise from local ditches and hillsides, decorating the landscape with a tapestry of purple, pink, blue, and white. Lupines often bloom right around the summer solstice, when the days are longest, and the fields are at their peak green. They are one of the signature wildflowers of early summer in the Northland.

Lupines are not just beautiful. Their deep taproot can reach deep underground, allowing them to survive in harsh, dry conditions. Lupines are also an essential food source for many pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and even hummingbirds.

Lupine leaves resemble little umbrellas, and they turn toward the sun during the day to capture more light. In much the same way, by turning toward the Son, Jesus Christ, during our days, we receive the light and blessings we need for today.

“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” — Luke 12:27

Next time you see a patch of lupines, remember to turn toward the Son and grow.

In this photo, a ruby-throated hummingbird pauses for just a second as it backs away from the feeder. With a lupine photo as a backdrop and multiple high-speed flash units, I captured this close-up moment that normally happens too fast for the eye to see.

These tiny birds can flap their wings up to 80 times per second and can hover in mid-air by rapidly moving their wings in a figure-eight pattern, something no other bird can truly do.

The red patch on the male hummingbird’s throat is called a gorget. What makes it remarkable is that the color comes from iridescence rather than pigment. The feathers contain microscopic plate-like structures that reflect light, causing the throat to flash brilliant ruby red only when the light hits it at the right angle.

Only God could have conceived of such a work of creation, made for His glory and our enjoyment.
