What sounds like a gentle chorus nearby can travel more than a mile through the landscape. Each male inflates a delicate vocal sac, turning his body into a living amplifier. It allows him to call for hours, conserving energy while competing for attention in a crowded spring symphony.

These early singers arrive because they can endure what few others can. Peepers survive near-freezing nights by producing a natural antifreeze, allowing parts of their bodies to freeze and thaw with the season. When the first warm evenings arrive, they gather quickly, call intensely, and begin the brief work of spring—breeding, laying eggs, and setting the next generation in motion.

Their rhythm even follows the air itself—faster on warm nights, slower in the cold—so that the tempo of the chorus becomes a measure of the season.

<a The first robin is a hallmark of spring in the Northland, known not just for its arrival but for its resilience.

Robins are incredibly hardy birds. Cold nights and warmer days create pressure changes inside the tree that cause the sap to flow. For this image, as soon as I hammered the tap into the sugar maple, sap began dripping from the spigot. I returned later at sunset for the right light. A small tap, a quiet forest, and a slow drip are among the surest signs that winter is losing its grip and spring is beginning to take hold. With this change, the subtle shift from winter to spring is mirrored by the quick start of the sap’s journey.

Within the sap, mostly water, lie the sugars and minerals patiently stored by the tree during the previous summer. Its taste is gently sweet, reminiscent of spring water with the faintest trace of sugar—subtle and refreshing. To transform this clear, humble sap into rich syrup, about 40 gallons are required for every single gallon produced. This transformation highlights how the slow drip of sap becomes a treasured seasonal harvest.

In the Northland, running sap is a true seasonal milepost, marking both the change in weather and the renewal of life. While snow still lies in the woods, and nights remain cold, the season has unmistakably turned. It is comforting to know that the same flow of life is occurring in every tree and plant around us, even if we do not see it. In this way, the story of sap ties us all to nature’s cycle. Spring is no longer coming — it has begun, and with it comes the promise of new beginnings.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5

Just as the sap rises quietly, life’s renewal often begins unnoticed, each drop carrying forward connection and promise. If we learn from the trees, they tell a story of creation and provision — a true gift for today from the hand of God, echoing the deep connections described earlier.

March 23 - Seasonal Milepost - Pussy Willows

New of pussy willows. Before any leaves show and while nights remain cold, these soft silver buds emerge along the edges of fields and streams, quietly signaling a shift in the landscape.

Among these mileposts, pussy willows stand out as some of the first woody plants to awaken in spring. The fuzzy catkins are actually protective coverings for the developing flowers, helping them withstand cold temperatures that would otherwise damage most early growth. Even while winter still lingers, the willows are already preparing for the growing season ahead.

Pussy willows are not just the beginning of spring—they represent its promise. Snow may linger, ice may still grip the lakes, and trees may stand bare, but the willows mark the certainty of the season’s change.

“See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come.” Song of Solomon 2:11–12

Unfailingly, each year, pussy willows return like a gentle calendar, a quiet reminder woven into the landscape that spring is inevitable, and winter always gives way to the next season.
