February 23 - Woody the Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker
The pileated woodpecker is one of North America’s most impressive forest birds. Common across the Northland, these bold visitors often stop at backyard feeders — including one just outside my window. With its prehistoric profile and brilliant red crest, this powerful bird demands attention wherever it lands.
Pileated woodpeckers are known for their loud, jungle-like call echoing through the trees: kuk-kuk-kuk-kuk! You’ll usually hear them long before you spot them. The famous cartoon Woody Woodpecker drew clear inspiration from this species, especially its dramatic crest and animated personality.
Even in the lean stretch of late winter, this striking bird finds what it needs. Watching it reminds me that provision often comes quietly and faithfully. God supplies daily needs in ways we may overlook — sometimes through simple acts like scattering seed outside a window.
“Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap… yet your heavenly Father feedeth them.” — Matthew 6:26
When seasons feel barren, remember that God’s care does not freeze with the weather. As the woodpecker is sustained day by day, so are we — invited to trust, to persevere, and to rest in faithful provision.
