January — Rest
Rest comes quietly, like falling snow.
January is a month of rest in the Northland. Midwinter settles in with deep snow and ice, softening the landscape and slowing the world’s rhythm. The low winter sun paints the sky with long, glowing sunrises and sunsets—often more vivid and dramatic than any other time of year.
For photographers, January is a gift. Extreme cold reveals rare and fleeting phenomena, such as sea smoke rising from Lake Superior—a quiet, almost mystical sight made possible only when frigid air meets warmer water.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28
Beneath the snow, the land rests. Deep drifts insulate the earth, protecting what will one day emerge in Spring. In the same way, this season invites us to slow down, to rest in the Word of God, and to trust that renewal is quietly unfolding beneath the surface as we prepare for the next season of our lives.
