July 31 - Towering Cumulus

By late July, weeks of summer warmth create rising air currents that build towering cumulus clouds high above Lake Superior. On this evening, the upper reaches glowed with brilliant whites and soft pastel colors against the deep blue sky.

Though they often begin as fair-weather clouds, cumulus towers can rapidly grow into thunderstorms over 40,000 feet tall. Powerful updrafts lift moisture into colder air, where rain, hail, and lightning are formed. Their growth reminds us how alive the summer atmosphere truly is.

Looking upward fills us with awe as these majestic clouds drift across the sky.
